FORGIVENESS CAN BE A SELFISH ACT!

HOW TO START EACH DAY WITH A POSITIVE OUTLOOK

“Forgiveness is almost a selfish act because of its immense benefits to the one who forgives.”

--Lawana Blackwell – (The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark, 1999)

Some people grow up and become experts at holding a grudge; they have a desire to win every battle and they need to protect their ego. Some remember past wrongs and at a moment’s notice; use them as ammunition against their loved ones and what do they gain but more sorrow and stress. When facing problems with those closest to you, instead of stressing out, wouldn’t it be nice if you could deal with them the way young children might?  Children can be angry with each other, call each other names, even fight and then go their separate ways.  Ten minutes later they can be playing together having forgotten the whole thing with no brooding; no wounded egos or blame, no bringing up the past, and most of all no stress. Being able to forgive and forget can only come when you can identify with others and admit to yourself your imperfections and your equal capacity for wrongdoing.  Forgiveness begins where blame ends. Forgiving implies trusting and forgetting the past and moving forward or just trying again, with the knowledge that the effort is worth it. Perhaps being more childlike would be a start in changing your attitude towards forgiveness?

Thoughts to Ponder

  • What if God stopped loving, forgiving and caring for us because we failed to forgive, love and care for others?
  • No one forgives with more grace and love than a child.
  • The hatred you’re carrying is a live coal in your heart – far more damaging to yourself than to them.
  • People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered – forgive them anyway.
